![Mt. Baldy [(10,064) x9] - Apr 14, 2013; Climb for Heroes : I joined the Whitney Portal Store's Message Board in supporting The Heroes Project in a Climb for Heroes on Mt. Baldy. The climb raises funds for The Heroes Project, which helps wounded warriors climb the world's highest peaks, and find a renewed purpose in their lives. The ability to overcome a mountain mentally, physically, and emotionally has proven to be a huge gift in the healing and livelihood of our vets. It was an honor to support The Heroes Project!
I left earlier than the official start time, partially to beat the heat, and partially cuz "it's a Sunday thing"... gotta git home and get everything in order for the week. The drive up the mountain was slow in the dense and misty fog. But, it lifted around the rest stop above Ice House Canyon. LA remained in a sea of clouds all day, as I climbed in the gorgeous blue skies. ![San Gorgonio (11,499 [x3]) - Apr 29, 2012 : I joined Ellen, Cindy, Krai, Florian, and Kelvin for my first snow climb of San G. I haven't been above 10k in 10 months and knew I was outta shape, but was excited to have the opportunity for a snow climb and to experience a new route. An 0530 meetup at the Mill Creek Ranger Station required an 0300 wakeup call. Ellen, Cindy, and I hit the South Fork Trail at 0630; Krai, Florian, and Kelvin met up with us at Poopout Hill. We continued on the snow free trail until the Dollar/Dry Lake junction, at which point we headed up a ridge to the east of Christmas Tree Hill. We arrived the "staging area" (bottom of the chute) just before 1130 and the snow was in near perfect condition. I switched to crampons as the slope steepened. I was slow going, the altitude definately was nagging at me, and my legs were cramping, but step by step I made my way up the chute. I was thankful for Ellen who provided me with some carbs and salt on the climb up. We topped out on the ridge at about 11.3K, and followed the near snow-free ridge to the summit. We refueled and rested a bit before heading back down. The glissade down lasted for nearly 1/2 mile; the snow was soft enough for me to maintain a comfortable speed or lack thereof). One of the best glissades Ive had! Our snowshoe down the west side of Christmas Tree Hill was tedious, as the snow had softened and we were intermittently postholing into the unknown. We crossed to the east side of South Fork Meadows and back to the trail. It was good to be back on terra firma. My post surgical foot hurt with every step, leading me to think that pain may just be a part of the rest of my hiking life. Nonetheless, it was good to be on level ground. I was absolutely exhausted at day's end, but satisfied and filled with gratitude for the gift of a new route! Upon day's end, we all went to the Oaks for dinner. Indeed, it was very good food! A great day, and many thanx to Ellen and the crew for being patient.
Trip stats: 13.97 mi; 4,608 ft total ascent; 12 hrs.

![Mt. Baldy [x6 (10,064)] via Register Ridge (x3) and Waning Moon : Adult obligations kept me close to home this weekend. It dawned on me Friday that we were just a few days out of a full moon, and I could do a local hike without loosing a lot of "day" time. I tossed out an invitation and Mandy joined me for her first Baldy ascent. The night temps were comfortable and wind at a minimum...until the saddle on the Backbone Trail just before the final ascent. We layered up here, and arrived at the summit as dawn was arriving over Apple Valley. Sunrise was gorgeous and we watched as the marine layer rolled in below, crashing clouds along the shores of the Cajon Pass. ![San Jacinto [(10,834) x4] - Jan 1, 2011 : New Year's plans for a backpack trip in Yosemite were overcome by responsibility, so I tried to make the best of both worlds... adult responsibility AND play time by ringing in the New Year with another snowshoe to San Jacito summit. It was the last peak of 2010, and first peak of 2011! Once again, I ran into Ellen, who was hiking with Sally today so I joined them. We were the only ones on the trail and at the summit! Unbelievable given the gorgeous day, albeit chilly. ![San Jacinto [(10,834) x3] - Dec 26, 2010 : A few days ago I emailed Steve Irwin that I was planning to snowshoe San Jac today, and although he had other commitments, he met me at the upper parking lot and introduced me to Fern and Tina who were shoeing. Turns out Ellen was joining them today - I knew Ellen from the message boards but had not met her and it was a delight to have her guide me on my first winter ascent of San Jac. WOOHOO! While waiting in the tram station, a gentleman came up to me and said, "You're Robin.. right?" It was Kevin, who hiked with me to Mt. Muir in 2009... he went on to bag Whitney, while me, Dave G, and Norma headed up to Muir. And, finally... after 5-6 years of online acquaintance, I met Kathy W, another admirable woman adventurer! A day of making new friends and meeting old friends! It was an amazing day. A brief overnight storm dropped about 6 inches of new snow, and we had virgin snow in a number of places. It was breezy off and on, and the icicles in the trees sang a magical chime. The snow and ice covered trees at along Miller Ridge and just below the summit were spectacular. The summit was cold and windy, so after a photo, headed to the hut for fuel and conversation with some of the SoCal Peakbaggers that were also on the mountain. A funtabulous day!
