Excelsior Mountain (12,446) - July 5, 2013

What a gorgeous area! I joined Cori for a new peak for both of us. The t-storms of the previous days were being blown out and our day was windeeee and gorgeous. The hike out of Virginia Lakes was gorgeous. The views from the summit are quite spendid. Trip stats: mi - 9.64; total ascent 2,705; RT time 8:55 (spent little over an hour on summit)

  • Excelsior is on left in back. The infamous red bumps in front. View is from just west of the pass. This is where a decision needs to be made as to how to get over/around the red bumps
  • Yellow = our route. Green = alternative and good routes. Our beta said not to go over the red bumps. Turns out, it would have been fine, we were about 2/3 the way up when we decided to traverse the bumps, east face > north face. We picked up a good use trail on the west side of the north face. Not possible to go to the left side of bump (cliff). Going over, one would have to descend a bit, but it cuts off a lot of distance. Another good routes is to drop down from the pass then climb the north ridge of the bump.
